Pay Per Performance Web Traffic

Why should you pay to get web site traffic, isn't SEO enough?

It's a fair question - after all most businesses on and offline
have tight budgets to play with and need to make each and every
penny count.

So why should you as a business pay good money to drive targeted
traffic to your site?

Perhaps there's a clue in the last question.

What other options are there?

You have 3 basic choices to get traffic to your website:

1. You pay - using PPC, ezine ads, banners etc...

2. You borrow - constructing Joint Ventures and endorsed offers
with partners

3. You grow your own - with natural search engine optimisation

So which is the best?

Well they all do a different job and have different characteristics,
perhaps the best information source you could hope to find on

But why PPC?

You need PPC because you can:

* Control the flow of traffic to your website

* Target buying customers and those most likely to buy through
correct keyword targeting

* Test different offers

The last benefit above is perhaps the most important. Remember
a page on a website doesn't have to stay recorded online forever...

Just because you've completed your site in terms of the pages
you want to add (although in truth you'll never be finished as
you can continually add more related content), this does not preclude
you from testing other pages...

The value of testing


Simple scenario: You want to test 2 price points for a product/service.
(Yes you can do this and people don't have to know about it so
don't be worried).

With a PPC campaign you can have your normal web page (Page A)
sitting as normal at the well known web address with all of your
normal links pointing to it.

You 2 price point test pages (Page B & C) are a different kettle
of fish - they sit off to the side and you push traffic to them
using PPC to quickly determine which is the winner.

You can do this for any test you dream up, the bottom line is
you can quickly determine what is working and what is not in your
marketing.

Knowing what's not working is more important than what is (particularly
if you are sailing close to the wind) because you SAVE money you
would otherwise have thrown away.

The Affiliate Advantage

When you have a website that is converting well, you will be able
to attract many affiliates (and even super affiliates if you are
doing a good enough job and providing a good enough incentive
package).

Affiliates can make your business explode overnight if you have
done your homework and have the site converting well.

If you have not you may attract them, they may pump some traffic
and then they will disappear to pastures new when they see you
are not doing a good job.

In summary

If I could give you one reason why you should use PPC and in particular
Google Adwords as part of your internet marketing campaign it
would be this:

"Feedback fast, feedback cheap"

Yes you may spend a little money up front, but you can save yourself
a whole lot of heartache on the back end.

What Is PageRank?

Chances are you have been on the Internet and have been surfing
in and out of websites looking for valuable information pertaining
to a favorite topic or researching a subject for school or work.
As you type in keyword(s) you match the information you are searching
for on Google, you come up with 10,000 pages of information. It’s
virtually impossible to go through every one, so you refine your
search by adding more exclusive keywords. Voila the number of
pages reduces to around 1,000. Still this is a lot of pages, but
you start looking through the information to find what you want.

As you go through the first 10 links on the page, WHAM! The information
you needed to find was in the first or second in order of PageRank.
You wonder how did they get such a high rank on Google? You may
think it was very expensive to get that site at the top of the
heap. The funny thing is, with a little know how and about $75
you too can go for the top.

Search Engine Optimization or “SEO”, has become a standard in
the web design industry, every customer of a good web designer
wants to be number one in their keyword and may be willing to
pay the extra money to get there. A good web designer will dress
up a web sites home page to match the requirements of their client
on specific keywords. The client will also pay more for the exclusivity
to remain there untouched. SEO has become a niche for a lot of
web companies. They know if they can get the company to the top
fast, the word of mouth will be helpful toward their business.

Through specialized META tags (hidden group of keywords) the web
designer will strategically place keywords multiple times in the
title bar, keywords, and even as hidden text. Some search engines
have figured these tricks of the trade out and have banned certain
websites from their indexes. Google has become the engine of choice
for a lot of people today. There is a different logic Google uses
to calculate page rank and keywords is only a portion of it.

Google actually uses a specialized mathematical equation to place
your site in a predetermined order. First things first, if your
website is a keyword, that does not automatically give you a top
spot. It will take time to move up the ranks and you should register
with Google as soon as possible to drive your rank upwards. But
just having the right URL (Universal Resource Locator) doesn’t
guarantee the top spot either. You must also be swapping or reciprocating
links with other Google users. The more you use Google websites
that are indexed the faster and higher your site will go in the
ranks.

A Google robot will visit your site frequently so continue to
modify your code and keep checking its rank and status. Eventually,
your site will drive up the ranks and land on top. It may take
time and work, but you will get the hang of keeping it there once
you employ the right mix of keywords with links. Some companies
can charge up to $1,000 for the top spot, they employ the same
techniques, even though they don’t want you to know this. Keep
your META tags, title, keywords and content in line with your
keywords and continuously look to optimize them. Under no circumstances
take another persons keywords off of their code; this is potentially
dangerous as you could be violating copyright laws.

Recently I wrote
an article discussing the merits of using free reprint articles
on your website to increase your search engine ranking. (The article
explained how Google loves lots of content on your site, how it
loves that content to be regularly updated, and how you can get
lots of keyword rich content for your site, absolutely free. See

A few days after publishing, I received a 'please help' email
from Loren, a small business owner. Her website is all about glass
art (http://www.headchangearts.com ), and she wanted some clarification
on some of the points I made in my previous article. Loren's questions
were good ones, and the answers important, so I thought I'd publish
them.

Q: We have a site for glass art. From your article, I gather that
if I create an articles page with free reprint articles (written
by other people) containing 'glass art' type keywords, I'll get
higher search rankings for those keywords? Is that correct? If
so, what page comes up in the rankings? The article itself or
my Home page? Also, if the article is being used by other webmasters,
won't the search results also include their version of the article?

A: In answer to your first question, yes, having an articles page
with keyword rich free reprint articles generally has the effect
of increasing your ranking. Google thinks highly of sites with
a lot of helpful content, but it all comes down to whether other
webmasters do as well. If your site contains heaps of helpful
content about glass art, other webmasters in the glass art field
(be they suppliers, distributors, or competitors) will be inclined
to link to you simply because that link implies (to their customers)
an association with you. That association boosts their credibility
because you're obviously an authority in the field. It also may
help their own search engine ranking a little as Google will then
see them as part of an expert, credible community of sites (although
the benefits of this for the linking site are minimal and arguable).
So, in a roundabout way, I'm saying that yes, article-based content
can help your ranking, but only if it increases the likelihood
that other related sites will link to yours.

As to the question of which page (the article itself or your home
page) displays in search results, that really depends on which
page has the most links to it*. If you have an article which is
just THE BEST source of info in the industry, and everyone's linking
to it, that page will display in the search results. This is good
because people who click on this result are interested specifically
in the content of the article. So when your website displays,
they get the information they want, and they'll be pleased. And
assuming your navigation is clear and easy to use, it is likely
they'll at least visit your home page.

And finally, yes, if other sites have published the same article,
they may display in the results alongside you. The same is true
of the original author's website. But it's important to remember
that, generally, the site with the highest PR will rank highest
in the results, and it's this site that most users will visit.
You just need to work hard to make sure that's you! For an example
of how this works, do a search for a very specific term related
to the article of mine which you've obviously read. Search Google
worldwide for "Google's love affair with content" (including the
quotes). You'll notice that the no.1 result is actually a page
on EzineArticles.com which contains my article. The page on my
site (DivineWrite.com) containing the article only ranks no.2.
This is because EzineArticles.com has a higher PR than DivineWrite.com,
and overall, the keywords are considered more relevant to the
rest of the content on their site than they are to mine. Obviously,
this means that a good article can display several times in the
same search results, but that's ok - it simply adds to the perceived
authority of the article and the sites containing it.

* Above I say that the page that displays in the results will
be the one with the most links to it. There are some complicating
factors here. For instance, the text in a link plays a big part
in how effective that link is. A link to your site that says "Click
here" or "check this site out", won't do you as much good as a
link which says "Glass Art sales" or "glass art creator". So if
lots of people are linking to the page containing the article,
but the text in their links is generic, then that page may not
rank as highly as a page with fewer - more keyword rich - links
pointing to it. Of course, this assumes that both pages are equally
well optimized for search engines and for the same keyword phrases.

I know that the above is a very specific question and the answer
is full of ifs and buts, but hopefully this exchange will answer
a few questions for a few people.

Three is Creating Long-Term Popularity

Finally, after
the hard-core efforts that are directly related to generating
traffic to your website, you next step is to develop a strategy
that creates follow-on, long-term traffic. Several methods exist
for this Tier III strategy:

- Taking the large list of ancillary keywords that relate directly
or indirectly to your website, begin purchasing keyword related
domain names that will be used to create traffic driving websites
that point to your money site.

- Setup satellite pages using the keyword domain names with the
idea of capturing traffic geared toward those specific keywords,
developing niche market traffic. As you develop niche markets
for those new customers, you are going to be able to capitalize
on those customers for the other products and/or services that
your company offers when these sites link back to your money site
as a result of informing and attracting these new customers through
the niche sites.

- Create links, backlinks and cross-links between the satellite
pages and your money site, improving your link popularity for
all websites, especially your money site.

- Display articles or e-books related to your industry and place
these articles on your websites being aware of the best location
based on keyword dominance.

- For long-term, viral marketing results, create articles or e-books
that you will either sell on your website or offer to public domain
websites where your link information must be retained for use
by anyone else on the internet; these articles will create links
that go back to your money site or your niche sites.

- Follow the same steps in Tier I and II for all the niche sites
as you did for your original money site; that is, design a SEO-optimized
website and follow Tier II strategy to create the necessary link
popularity to drive traffic to these sites.

Monitoring

In order to determine if the SEO efforts are successful, you must
monitor results of for number and quality of backlinks, PR and
web trend statistics. There are many sources for generating this
data as well as programs that will assist in these analyses. Whatever
method you choose, whether it is using specific programs or setting
up a spreadsheet for entry of data, be consistent in tracking
the data. There will be fluctuations from day-to-day that you
should expect. You are looking for general, overall upward trends,
not short-term blips. Upward progress followed by maintenance
of a strong position with slow, steady growth would indicate a
successful SEO campaign.

This 3-Tiered approach to SEO Strategy is very effective when
implemented with the patience it takes for long-term results.
Short-term "fixes" and "tricks" may have an effect in the short-run,
but as the search engines change and adapt their algorithms --
as they doing almost monthly -- what worked today for quick results
may actually get you banned tomorrow. This strategy is based on
search engine directives: Well-designed websites, free of bad
code, offering information, services or products of interest to
the internet community will create their own base of popularity
-- for which you will be rewarded by strong, growing traffic.
When you are in it for the long haul, your strategy must utilize
long-term efforts.

Advice and Tactic

Unique content
is King. Search engines love new, unique and updated content.
If you produce new content at a rate of just one reasonably sized
page per day and tied in with the other advice throughout the
site, I can almost guarantee you will get good listings. Remember
though, write for the visitors but cater for the search engines.
If your field of expertise fits into a niche in the market, all
the better for you but you must get unique content all you will
fall behind.

Page Structure. Search engine bots can sometimes get confused
with poorly coded html, javascript and other web languages. If
the bot has to wait too long or cannot decipher the web language
then it will just abandon your site and move on to the next, even
if it manages to get through the code it usually leads to poor
search engine indexing of your website. You should also keep to
widely used file extensions like .htm, .html, .php, .asp for your
pages.

Loading Speed. The loading speed of your website should be kept
to a minimum, if it takes long than 5 seconds on 256kb+ connections
then you lose visitors - both real and search engine bots. There
are a variety of reasons why pages can load slowly, it may either
be your web server, poorly coded server side code like php or
client side code like javascript which can slow or even stop your
page from loading.

Visitor Navigation. This is more an aesthetic feature of your
website focused at real visitors but you need to have some sort
of standard navigation that is the same throughout your whole
site. People can be put off and leave your website if they find
it difficult to browse easily, search engine bots may also miss
links if they can only be found deep within your site. Try to
make as many internal links as possible available on each page.

Site Hierarchy. Site hierachy can be great for adding keyword
density to your web site. An example of site hierachy working
effectively would be this page, seo-advice.php. The full link
contains SEO twice - www.seoassistance.com/seo-advice.php which
is very beneficial in the way search engines determine your sites
relevance to a particular subject. Use your domain, folders and
file names to your advantage.

Avoid Blackhat SEO. Blackhat SEO is a vast topic that commands
little respect from real webmasters as it means using underhand
methods to gain search engine rankings, although the site is usually
banned quickly. Blackhat SEO includes using link farms, search
engine spamming, hidden or disguised text, fake meta tag data,
using duplicate content and using doorway pages. I would recommend
you stay away from tactics like this as you will end up losing
out in the long run.

Targeted Linkswaps. Link swaps are great but you must make them
work for you. It does little good for you when your going for
top search engine positions when your link swaps are untargeted.
You should choose some specific keywords for both the link text
and the link title text then make sure before you link swap that
the other webmaster adds those specific keywords with the link.

Tips - Part Two

Welcome to the
second part of our series of articles on search engine optimization.
In the previous article we discussed keywords, domain names, content
and keyword density issues. This article moves past that to the
nitty gritty of improving your web pages and website for better
search engine rankings.

Page Title

It's truly amazing how many people don't realize how critical
the TITLE tag can be to the success or failure of your website.
Your TITLE tag needs to have your most important keyword for that
page included in it. This is for the benefit of the search engines.

From a visitors point of view it also needs to entice them to
click on your title tag when they see it in the search engine
results. If your page is about PDA Accessories don't just use
that phrase in the TITLE tag.

Dress it up a bit. For example "PDA Accessories For The Busy Geek"
or "Need Accessories for Your PDA? Come right in!" Those examples
took me 10 seconds to come up with. You can do far better with
a little more time and effort.

META Keyword Tag

Anybody still using the Meta Keyword tag as their sole search
engine optimization method please leave the room. Go on get out
and don't come back.

The Meta Keyword tag is all but dead to the search engines. When
building your pages it's still worth including but simply put
in the top 3 or 4 keywords that are relevant to your business
and leave it at that. Do not spend hours coming up with hundreds
of keywords to stuff into the Meta Keyword tag. It's a total waste
of time and anybody who tells you different has no idea what they're
talking about.

META Description Tag

This still has some limited value for your SEO work. When Google
or other search engines display search results they display the
contents of the TITLE tag and your Meta Description tag (if present)
or a random selection of text from the page. Your Meta Description
tag will take priority if present.

The Meta Description tag is still worth using. Your most important
keyword should be in there and again you need to work this keyword
into an eye catching phrase or sentence. Don't just copy and paste
the main keyword in there.

If the Meta Description tag is used well, in conjunction with
the TITLE tag, then it can make your displayed search result more
inviting to the potential visitor. Again don't spend more than
a few minutes on your Meta Description tag but do make sure that
you include it on each page. One final note - make the Meta Description
for each page different; don't just recycle the same one over
and over.

RSS

Stands for Really Simple Syndication and is probably something
you've heard a lot about over the last few months. RSS allows
you to display the news items and/or content from other sites
on your website as part of a "news feed". This adds a huge amount
of value to your site from a vistors point of view - they don't
need to leave your site to get the latest news on a given topic.
The other benefit is that search engines love seeing fresh content
on websites.

At the moment there's a huge upsurge in the use of RSS for search
engine optimization. The question is does it work? Yes it does.
Using RSS can most definitely encourage the search engines to
come back to visit your site more often. How does it work? Well
again that goes beyond the scope of this article so please refer
to our site for more information.

Blogs

Also called Web Logs are basically online diaries. For a long
time these were used solely by... well.... geeks to record their
thoughts and as a way of sharing information on Star Trek. Seriously
though initially blogs were never seen as anything more than a
curiousity.

Recently with the increased visibility of RSS blogs have also
seen their profile rise. Why? Well because many RSS feeds feature
blog content. Which means what exactly? It means your blog could
be included on and linked to from thousands of websites all over
the world. Are you seeing the possiblities? There are some other
nuances to consider but to mention them here would give the game
away completely and certain ebook authors would put a price on
my head for giving away their secrets.

Site Maps can
be a great tool for making search engines crawl through your web
site in a much more effective manner, thereby helping you get
more pages indexed, and ultimately getting you more visitors.
Most people know what site maps are, as they can be seen on many
of the major websites, although for those who don¡¦t, ¡§a site
map is a page which contains a list of all the links within a
website, under different categories and headings, just like a
table of contents of a book¡¨. Now when a search engine hits the
site map page, it gets to see all the links within that website
and this enables it to crawl through those pages. It¡¦s just like
guiding search engines with the help of a map, in this large universe
of internet.

Site maps also help visitors to get an overview of the entire
web site, and hence act as a great navigational tool. It helps
visitors find specific pages through a single page, for which
they might have had to follow several links to reach the desired
page. Here are some examples of well designed site maps.

This leads us to the next question, i.e. how should site maps
be designed. Designing a site map can be as simple as designing
any other static pages without any pictures, graphics, etc. But
all effort should be made to keep the structure logical and simple.
Its best to browse through the web, and check out a variety of
site maps before you decide on what kind of structure you want
to follow.

Here are some things you should keep in mind, before designing
a site map.

Homepage Link: It is important to give a prominent link from the
homepage to the sitemap page, so that visitors and search bots
can easily hit the site map page. In fact, preferably there should
be a link to the site map page from every page of your website.

Text Links: Plain text links should be used for all the links,
as some search bots can have problems crawling through ¡§JavaScript¡¨.

Categories: It is important to organise the contents into well
defined categories, and even sub-categories for easy navigation
of the user. Although this doesn¡¦t have direct SEO implications,
it makes more sense to the user.

Descriptive Content: It is ideal to add some content describing
the links, as search engines tend to ignore pages, full of links.
It is also important to use your targeted keywords in your descriptive
content as well as in your anchor text.

Anchor Text Link: It is important to use page titles as your anchor
text, so that you can increase your anchor text back links. This
is helpful for search engine optimization as it increases your
link popularity.

Mr. Ethical: There is no need for link building if you know how
to optimize a website properly. It’s all on-site work and some
basic submissions to some directories.

Mr. Links: Yeah that’s what it starts with, but you have to admit
that once you’re done with on-site optimization and the results
are not there yet, you need to do link building in order to increase
the rankings.

Mr. Ethical: Nothing of the sort, Mr. Links. Links will come by
them selves if you have enough content that will attract links
naturally.

Mr. Links: So how are these people going to find your website
if links are what you need to be found in the first place? Those
couple of basic submissions won’t give you high enough rankings,
if at all, to be found by people that want to link to your content.
It’s a chicken and the egg problem.

Mr. Ethical: Most websites already have a bunch of back links
so that’s not really an issue. All you have to do is optimize
the site and eventually enough people will find the site to get
even higher rankings.

Mr. Links: But what about a site that is in a very competitive
market and most top sites have many back links already? Wouldn’t
you want to get some more links?

Mr. Ethical: Link schemes are unethical.

Mr. Links: Unethical link schemes are unethical.

Mr. Ethical: Natural links are ethical.

Mr. Links: And links obtained through other types of ethical marketing?

Mr. Ethical: Other types of ethical marketing?

Mr. Links: Yes, advertising for example. Isn’t advertising a very
natural business?

Mr. Ethical: Bought links are unethical because links need to
be relevant.

Mr. Links: What about relevant bought links?

Mr. Ethical: Natural links don’t cost anything.

Mr. Links: And how much time does it take for links to naturally
occur?

Mr. Ethical: Doesn’t matter. You have to do everything ethically.
And obviously you don’t know how to optimize a website because
you think you need links to get high rankings.

Mr. Links: But you do too. You just said that most sites already
have a bunch of back links. In fact, you said that natural links
will help you get higher rankings. So you actually agree that
for high rankings you do need links.

Mr. Ethical: Everything needs to be done ethical.

Mr. Links: Does that include selecting clients that are in not
the most competitive markets?

Mr. Links: Never mind answering that.

The Good and the
Bad of SEO – From Googles Mouth!

I recently had the opportunity to ask questions of some Google
staffers. There were some questions I felt I needed to get verification
on, so when I had the opportunity via a conference call I took
it.

In this article I highlight some of the points made during the
call so you know what Google thinks.

You know its bad when you take time from your holidays to come
into work to attend a conference call. But that’s what I did a
few weeks ago. You see I had to because I was going to have the
opportunity to ask some Google employees specific questions on
things that I’d been pretty sure about, but wanted to hear it
right from the horses mouth.

The call lasted less than an hour, but in that time I found that
there were many things I figured were indeed true. So lets start
with the most obvious:

Is PageRank still important?

The short answer is yes – PageRank has always been important to
Google. Naturally they couldn’t go into details but it is as I
suspected. Google still uses the algorithm to help determine rankings.
Where it falls in the algo mix, though, is up for speculation.
My feeling however is that they’ve simply moved where the PageRank
value is applied in the grand scheme of things. If you want to
know what I think, be sure to read this article.

Are dynamic URLs bad?

Google says that a dynamic URL with 2 parameters “should” get
indexed. When we pressed a bit on the issue we also found that
URLs themselves don’t contribute too much to the overall ranking
algorithms. In other words, a page named Page1.asp will likely
perform as well as Keyword.asp.

The whole variable thing shouldn’t come as a surprise. It is true
that Google will indeed index dynamic URLs and I’ve seen sites
with as many as 4 variables get indexed. The difference however
is that in almost all cases I’ve seen the static URLs outrank
the dynamic URLs especially in highly competitive or even moderately
competitive keyword spaces.

Is URL rewriting OK in Google’s eyes?

Again, the answer is yes, provided the URLs aren’t too long. While
the length of the URL isn’t necessarily an issue, if they get
extremely long they can cause problems.

In my experience, long rewritten URLs perform just fine. The important
thing is the content on the page.

That was a common theme throughout the call – content is king.
Sure optimized meta tags, effective interlinking and externalizing
JavaScript all help, but in the end if the content isn’t there
the site won’t do well.

Do you need to use the Google Sitemap tool?

If your site is already getting crawled effectively by Google
you do not need to use the Google sitemap submission tool.

The sitemap submission tool was created by Google to provide a
way for sites which normally do not get crawled effectively to
now become indexed by Google.

My feeling here is that if you MUST use the Google sitemap to
get your site indexed then you have some serious architectural
issues to solve.

In other words, just because your pages get indexed via the sitemap
doesn’t mean they will rank. In fact I’d bet you that they won’t
rank because of those technical issues I mentioned above.

Here I’d recommend getting a free tool like Xenu and spider your
site yourself. If Xenu has problems then you can almost be assured
of Googlebot crawling problems. The nice thing with Xenu is that
it can help you find those problems, such as broken links, so
that you can fix them.

Once your site becomes fully crawlable by Xenu I can almost guarantee
you that it will be crawlable and indexable by the major search
engine spiders.

Does clean code make that much of a difference?

Again, the answer is yes. By externalizing any code you can and
cleaning up things like tables you can greatly improve your site.

First, externalizing JavaScript and CSS helps reduce code bloat
which makes the visible text more important. Your keyword density
goes up which makes the page more authoritative.

Similarly, minimizing the use of tables also helps reduce the
HTML to text ratio, making the text that much more important.

Also, as a tip, your visible text should appear as close to the
top of your HTML code as possible. Sometimes this is difficult,
however, as elements like top and left navigation appear first
in the HTML. If this is the case, consider using CSS to reposition
the text and those elements appropriately.

Do Keywords in the domain name harm or help you?

The short answer is neither. However too many keywords in a domain
can set off flags for review. In other words blue-widgets.com
won’t hurt you but discount-and-cheap-blue-and-red-widgets.com
will likely raise flags and trigger a review.

Page naming follows similar rules – while you can use keywords
as page names, it doesn’t necessarily help (as I mentioned above)
further, long names can cause reviews which will delay indexing.

How many links should you have on your sitemap?

Google recommends 100 links per page.

While I’ve seen pages with more links get indexed, it appears
that it takes much longer. In other words, the first 100 links
will get indexed right away, however it can take a few more months
for Google to identify and follow any links greater than 100.

If your site is larger than 100 pages (as many are today) consider
splitting up your sitemap into multiple pages which interlink
with each other, or create a directory structure within your sitemap.
This way you can have multiple sitemaps that are logically organized
and will allow for complete indexing of your site.

Can Googlebot follow links in Flash or JavaScript

While Googlebot can identify links in JavaScript, it cannot follow
those links. Nor can it follow links in Flash.

Therefore I recommend having your links elsewhere on the page.
It is OK to have links in flash or JavaScript but you need to
account for the crawlers not finding them. Therefore the use of
a sitemap can help get those links found and crawled.

As alternatives I know there are menus which use JavaScript and
CSS to output a very similar looking navigation system to what
you commonly see with JavaScript navigation yet uses static hyperlinks
which crawlers can follow. Therefore do a little research and
you should be able to find a spiderable alternative to whatever
type of navigation your site currently has.

Overall, while I didn’t learn anything earth shattering, it was
good to get validation “from the horses mouth” so to speak.

I guess it just goes to show you that there is enough information
out there on the forums and blogs. The question becomes determine
which of that information is valid and which isn’t. But that,
I’m afraid, usually comes with time and experience.

Webmasters have
a revolutionary new method of collecting income from their websites.

of advertising; they have created a program that is beneficial

for ads that are not drawing visitors, and website owners are
paid more for each click than they would if the system were based
on the number of people viewing the ads, instead of clicking on

So you want to increase your Adsense income? Log into your Adsense
account, and look at your last month's stats. There are three
key areas that contribute to your earnings: Impressions, Clickthroughs
and Effective CPM. Improving your stats in any, or preferably,
all of these three key areas will increase your Adsense earnings.

Impressions

Impressions are the number of times your webpages with Adsense
ads have been viewed. You can increase Impressions by increasing
traffic (preferably targeted traffic) to your webpages. Some of
the best ways to increase targeted traffic to your webpages include:

-create more webpages, with relevant, focused content

-create more links to your webpages

-list your website/s under relevant categories in more directories

-set up a directory of relevant sites on your website and accept
relevant

reciprocal links

-write relevant articles, with your site information in the 'resource
box' at the end of each article, and submit them to article directories

-advertise with pay per click search engines like Google's Adwords.

Although you can't dictate which Adsense ads show on your site,
you can

influence the relevance of the ads by maintaining a tightly focused
website. If every page on your site focuses tightly on the site
topic, its more likely that the Adsense ads will too. For example,
if every page of your site is about fishing, and the word 'fishing'
appears several times on every page, its likely that your Adsense
ads will relate to fishing.

The best way to tweak your ad format and placement is to invest
in an Adsense Tracker, and test, test, test! People who have done
this tend to suggest that the best format is the large rectangle,
with background and border the same color as the page behind it,
so that the ad blends into the page. The best placement is towards
the center or top left of the first screen of the page. Try these suggestions
first, and then track and test, to be sure of what works best
for your pages.

Effective CPM

Effective CPM is a measure of your average earnings, per thousand
clicks. You can increase your Effective CPM by selecting topics
that attract high bids from Adsense advertisers, and building
pages and whole websites on higher paying topics.

Although Google doesn't release information on Adsense bids, you
can get a good idea of the top paying topics by looking at information
on Adwords bids, or, for that matter, bids on pay-per-click search
engines like Overture. There are a number of keyword research
tools available, both free and paid, that can help you find high
paying topics.

The Formula

So now you have the basics of increasing your Adsense income.
Its a deceptively simple formula:

-Build pages and websites on high paying topics for the best Effective
CPM.

-Format and place your Adsense ads for maximum Clickthroughs.

-Promote your sites to drive targeted traffic to your Adsense
webpages for maximum impressions.

There's a lot of buzz around about how you can make a quick and
easy fortune using this AdSense course or that tool or this book.

And they show you their incomes from AdSense too (though not necessarily
THIS month). Now, is it just me or is something a little odd in
all this?

Say, I'm making $5000 - no make that $15,276 a month from AdSense
on my sites. And now I'm going to sell all my secrets on how to
do that for $67 or $97 or whatever.

So what happened, did I get all bored with my filthy riches and
decide to become a philanthropist and sell stuff that makes me
15K a month for a pittance? Or is it something else?


Am I saying it's impossible? Certainly not. I know people who
make that more

But a little reality. Those people don't have 5 or 6 or 50 sites.
They have maybe 500 or 3000 or more. Few sites make 20 or more
a day. Very few. Average income is probably less than a dollar
a day. So with 500 sites at a dollar a day, you've got your 15K
a month.

Now the domain names cost you maybe $3500 to $4500. Then you need
hosting and somehow you've got to build the sites and get traffic
to them. There are excellent tools but the ones that will let
you do this kind of thing in a reasonably short time are also
very (very) expensive.

And you are continually dealing with sites that don't get indexed
or get de-indexed or even get banned. Traffic today, gone tomorrow.
Plus, if you're not real careful with those tools you may get
an unpleasant letter from Google about a DMCA copyright infringement
which could cost you your AdSense account.

You can make money, you can build an empire. But it isn't easy
or quick no matter what you hear. And it really isn't a business.
It's not a long run proposition, it's not stable. You need to
keep creating more sites as older ones fail - or you need to be
smart and use those AdSense revenues to build an enduring business.

You put up with this down to here, so here are the real 7 "secret"
keys to AdSense.

1. The best performing AdSense type is the large rectangle. This
has been tested over and over.

2. The best colors are blue for the link - surfers know that blue
means click me. And darkish almost black and grey for the text
and url. No borders. The same background as your page. Will it
merge into your content? No, that's bogus. There are maybe 4 surfers
in this galaxy who can't tell a Google ad when they see one. They
are not going to believe it's part of the text. Wake up, OK?

3. Another format which is being reported to more or less work
is the full wide banner type layout with text ads and images directly
above the links. Try it and see if it works for you. Maybe it's
a fad.

4. Keywords and related content are critical if you want targeted
ads. If you want high paying clicks you need to target the costly
keywords AND have content that supports the keywords.

5. You need traffic interested in the ads. Which means your traffic
generation techniques have to be targeted not scattershot. You
might hear that 1% or 1.5% clickthrough rate is OK and 3% is good.
Nonsense. Really successful people get CTRs that are often well
above 30%. Even with modest efforts you should be getting an average
6 to 15% CTR (per ad impression, not pages).
6. You have to track what you're doing and you have to test variations
in ad layout, placement, color and related content to optimize
your income. No one can tell you how to do it except the traffic
coming to your site. If you don't test and track, you're flying
blind.

7. You need to keep building new sites.

You are now a member of the AdSense Illuminati. Quite possibly
you already knew all that. So why are you looking for something
else? Really. This is all you need to start doing it.

Probably any course or book can help you if that's what it takes
to get you moving and doing. Ultimately, no one can really show
you exactly how to do it. You're going to have to learn the ropes
and put in the time.

Like everything in life - the greatest traffic generator, the
ultimate course or the super MLM opportunity, if it sounds too
good to be true, then it is. There's no magic bullet, no ultimate
secret to buy. There's no easy, painless, work free, certain road
to riches (except, maybe, inheriting it and that can be very hard
on the heirs).

Whatever you do on the net, do it wide awake and with your brain
actually functioning. The final un-numbered key is that a technique,
a shortcut, an idea that will make what you do easier, faster,
or more profitable - one single tiny thing - is worth more than
any book or course costs. One useable idea and you've gotten a
great deal. If you learned something you didn't know or had forgotten,
then it's worth much more than you paid. There may not be any
magic solution out there, but there are useful concepts, techniques
and ideas. You just have to see them for what they are, and then
get busy and really use them.

What You Should Know Before Buying Computer Equipment

There are many
factors to consider when deciding on which computer equipment
to buy. The massive amount of choices can seem overwhelming. This
guide can help you compare computer equipment features, and help
you to examine and sift through the basic items before you buy
a new computer.
If it is a desktop PC, laptop, discount/surplus computer, a refurbished
computer or a computer accessory, this quick guide will help you
to get the most for your money.

With computer equipment today almost any of them will adequately
handle what most people need to buy a new computer for; word processing,
basic office, internet surfing and email. Which you can buy for
about $1000. or less! But if you are into digital videos, photo
editing, music, or manage a large database you will need more
than the basic Desktop PC or Laptop. This higher end computer
will cost you around $1500-$2000.

(CPU) Processors:
There is always a lot of change in the computer market, but no
matter what the upgrades there is always two basic choices to
be made when purchasing computer equipment:
1) brand 2) speed. To buy a new computer that handles standard
office and Internet tasks any processor will work.

Need more 'power' in your computer equipment? Then the Intel Pentium4
or the AMD Athlon XP (great for graphics and photos which use
a lot of memory space) are for you.

If you buy a new computer one or two levels from the top you will
only lose about five percent per tier performance but you can
save a couple hundred dollars!

(RAM) Memory:
Memory is very important because optimum running of your computer
equipment is dependent on enough RAM. The minimum amount should
be 256MB, for better performance you should get 512MB. If you
can afford to buy a new computer with more, you should. It's worth
it because you can keep more applications open and it will easily
handle memory hogs like Photoshop and music applications!

Monitors:
When buying computer equipment look for a monitor that is at least
17" with a resolution of 1280 by 1024 pixels. A Desktop PC with
a 19-inch monitor gives you 20 % more screen area. If you can
spend $300-$450 on a monitor when you buy a new computer you might
want to get a 15" LCD because it has the same viewable area as
the 17" CRT and takes up much less space.

Hard Drives (storage):
Most hard drives sold today will provide more than enough storage.
The basic computer equipment comes with 40GB or larger, which
is plenty for most tasks. But for working with graphics, video,
music, or large databases 80GB should be the minimum you settle
for. 7200-rpm drives give better performance. But for the best
performance get a computer with 8MB of cache.


Warranty and Tech Support:
A one-year warranty on most computer equipment is enough, because
most problems seem to happen in the first year. If you want you

Parents are constantly
struggling with ways to keep their children safe online. The Internet
has a global reach and at this point no bounds, or limitations.
Outside of installing filtering software children should be educated
in order to protect themselves to this virtual monster. We've
put together a collection of ten tips that should be observed
while surfing online. At the very least these tips will prompt
family discussions regarding safety.
1.) When on the internet personal information should be kept private.
Just because someone asks doesn't mean you need to tell them.
When someone asks for personal information, consider how they
might use that information and whether it is necessary for them
to have it.

2.) If you are conversing with someone online, don't assume that
they are being honest with you. Just because they say they're
16 doesn't mean they are.

3.) Do not release your password to anyone, even if they say they
are from your online provider.

4.) Overall it is best not to respond to unsolicited e-mail (SPAM),
if there is something flagrant or inappropriate in the e-mail,
consider reporting the sender to their Internet Service Provider
(ISP).

5.) Do not give out or post identifying information, including
address or telephone numbers.

6.) You may want to create a nickname for a screen name in chat
rooms.

7.) Keep in mind when posting in chat rooms or newsgroups, that
there may be lurkers (people who read but do not post). Your information
can be read and seen by all.

8.) Keep an open dialogue with children surfing the Internet,
remember if they come to you with a problem, your first reaction
should not be to take away the Internet. Applaud child's confidence
in confiding in you and work together to find a solution.

9.) Overall it is not a good idea to post or exchange pictures
over the Internet

10.) Try to keep in mind the Internet is global and is *not* governed
by any entity. This means that there are no limitations or checks
on the information posted and accessible to Internet users.
